ITINERARY: Bird Watching Trips

San Blas, Nayarit, MX is well known for bird-watching, with over 300 species. Here are a few local trips available.

Bird-watching in Singayta
5 miles east of San Blas. You can see 35 to 50 species of birds like the Fantail Warbler, Russet Crown Motmot, Citron Trogon, and the Lineated Woodpecker. 4-hour walk on level ground.

La Tovara National Park: Morning or Evening Tours
In the evening you can see the Boat-billed Heron, Tiger heron, Northern Potoo, Common Pauraque, Lesser Nighthawk and many more birds. This is an exciting jungle boat tour where you will also see crocodiles, turtles, iguanas and numerous other creatures in the tropical vegetation. Evening tour starts at 3pm. 4 to 5 hours.

San Cristobal River and Zoquipan
You will see the Roseate Spoonbill, Common Black Hawk, Great Black Hawk, Grey Hawk, Crane Hawk, Snail Kite, Limpkin, Boat-billed Herons, Tiger Heron, & many others. See giant crocodiles and other reptiles in their natural habitat. Morning tour leaves from the bridge at the entrance to San Blas at the San Cristobal River. Starts at 6am. 4 to 5 hours.

La Bajada
A mountain village 12 miles southeast of San Blas. Mango groves and jungle are home to spectacular birds like the Elegant Trogon, Golden Vireo, Tufted Flycatcher, Orange-fronted Parakeet, Pale-billed Woodpecker, Masked Tityra. 4-hour walk on sloping dirt roads.

Mirador de el Aguila
Visit an overlook where you can observe the Military Macaws, Orange-fronted Parakeet and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. 45 minutes from San Blas near Tepic. 3pm to 6pm.

A note about Motion Sickness:
Before traveling, eat a light breakfast, or crackers, and stay away from greasy foods. If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking medication prescribed by your doctor, taken as directed. Try your medication the day before you travel to make sure it does not effect you adversely.
